Why can’t I get my Press-Tight® Connector to seal?
Press-Tight® Connectors are easy to use, but if they are not properly sealed, they can loosen due to thermal expansion during temperature-programmed runs. The keys to successful sealing are: 1) making a clean square cut on the column and 2) moistening the end of the column with methanol before seating it into the connector. A small amount of polyimide resin also helps prevent the seal from separating during temperature cycling.
Instructions for using the Press-Tight® Connector, which are included with the product, are outlined below.
  1. Make a clean, square cut on the column.
  2. Wipe the end of the column with methanol.
  3. Gently insert (don’t force) the column into the connector until a brown ring appears.
  4. Hold the column in place for 8-10 seconds.
  5. Check for a good connection: establish gas flow through the column, place a drop of methanol at the seal, and look for bubbling.
  6. After a good connection is confirmed, raise the oven temperature to 225°C (but do not exceed the temperature limit of the column) for 5 minutes to soften the polyimide resin on the column. A permanent seal will form as the column cools.
