How do I install a column in my Agilent 6890 instrument?
Follow the recommendations on the column installation card, which is included with most columns. If an installation card is not available, use the following procedure:
  • Cut approximately ten centimeters from each end of the column. Install the appropriate nut and ferrule onto the end of the column that will be installed in the injection port. Cut an additional ten centimeters from this end of the column. Install the appropriate length of column (following the instrument manufacturer?s recommendation) into the injection port. Tighten the injection port nut 1/4 turn past finger tight.
  • Set the column carrier gas flow and/or GC head pressure. Verify the flow by immersing approximately one inch of the outlet end of the column into an appropriate solvent (e.g., methanol).
  • Test for leaks, using a thermal conductivity leak detector.
  • Turn the GC oven on and set the temperature to 50°C. Allow carrier gas to purge the injection port and column for at least 20 minutes at this temperature.
