Method 547 (Glyphosate)
Skinner List - Volatiles (19 components)
- Includes all 19 compounds listed in 1997 Region 5 Skinner List.
- Includes methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE).
- Single calibration -- includes m-xylene and p-xylene at half concentration of other compounds.
To assist in the analysis of specific organic constituents in petroleum refinery waste, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Solid Waste developed and published a Constituents of Petroleum Refining Wastes list in 1985. In 1993 the list was updated and was labeled Constituents for Wastes from Petroleum Processes. In 1997, the Region 5 Waste Management Branch combined the 1985 and 1993 lists and generated a more extensive list of refinery process waste constituents, which was categorized as the Region 5 Skinner List.
In our continual effort to help our customers solve their analytical problems, we introduced a reference mix, Region 5 Skinner List Volatiles Mix, for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in petroleum refinery waste. Because
m-xylene and
p-xylene coelute, we included these isomers at half the concentration of the other compounds. Consequently, users of this mix do not have to run an extra calibration level in order to quantify
m- &
p-xylene at the required lower limits.
After extensive research we determined that the best solvent to use with the Skinner list volatiles is 90% purge & trap methanol and 10% water. This solvent system protects the keto group in 2-butanone and prevents acetal formation, which would occur in an alcohol environment (e.g., in methanol). Methyl
tert-butyl ether also is included in the mix because of its wide use as a gasoline additive.
