Guard columns and retention gaps are widely used in gas chromatography for different reasons. A guard column traps nonvolatile material at the head of the column, not allowing it to reach the analytical column, protecting it. A retention gap helps focus the compounds transferred from the inlet as a small band at the head of the analytical column to minimize chromatographic peak broadening. Siltek-treated, stainless-steel MXT guard columns provide excellent compatibility with MXT analytical columns while offering the strength of metal with the inertness of glass. These guard columns can also function as retention gaps. To discover how to connect an MXT guard column or retention gap (deactivated tubing) to an analytical column using an MXT low dead-volume connector, see the MXT Low Dead Volume Connectors for Use with Fused Silica Capillary Columns installation instructions.
