Over time, a GC-FID jet can get dirty and even clogged. Replacing the jet on our flame ionization detector should become part of our routine maintenance program. In this example, we replace the FID jet in an Agilent 7890 gas chromatograph. The steps may vary on different instruments or configurations.

Hello everyone, and welcome to another Restek tip. In this video, we are going to replace an FID jet. This is a relatively common piece of routine maintenance that we need to do on our instruments, because our FID jets can get contaminated or even clogged over time. Before we start on a project like this, we do want to make sure that we turn off our gases to our instrument, and that we cool down the FID itself. We don't want to burn our fingers. Once it's cool enough to work with, we can go through the several steps that are involved in this process.
The first of those is disconnecting our ignitor cable. Once we've done that, we can then remove the screws that attach the FID assembly to the instrument itself. We can remove that whole assembly as one part, and that reveals to us the FID jet. We'll grab a nut driver, and that we'll use to remove the jet itself.
Once it's out, we can clean it if that's our goal, or we can grab a new one to do a full replacement. Once we're ready to put everything back together again, we will just follow those same steps in reverse order. That's it. That's all that's involved with replacing an FID jet, and hopefully that shows you just how simple this routine maintenance task can be. Thank you very much for joining us for this Restek tip.
